Description

Vin Santo del Chianti Doc Reserve

Our Vin Santo of Chianti, is produced with the grapes (Trebbiano and Malvasia) carefully chosen, before the harvest, and let it flow naturally, for at least 3 months, on “castles of canneccets” and “pendane”, placed in the Vinsantaia Dell ‘agency.
The must obtained from the withered grapes is fermented and aging in Caratelli (small barrels of chestnut or oak) for 3 years. After this long period, the caratelli are reopened and the saint vin obtained, is transferred to tonneaux for another year. After that the Vin Santo is bottled and left to refine until November of the fifth year from the harvest.

Vin Santo is a mystical product, from the history of the origins of the name. In fact, there are various theories about the origin of this name. A version wants a Franciscan friar of the fourteenth century succeeded in healing the sick of plague with sweet wine, commonly used to celebrate the masses. He thus suggested the miraculous properties renaming him “Holy”. Another version tells us that during the Council of Florence of 1439, Cardinal Giovanni Bessarione proclaimed: “This is Xantos wine!” He was referring to a particular wine produced on the Greek island of Santorini. The cardinals who shared the table with him, confused the word Xantos, which indicated the small island of the Aegean, with the adjective “holy”, spreading the use of the current denomination of sweet Tuscan wine.
